The Song of Orpheus
So far this is my favorite story arc. I love when Gaiman takes mythologies, particularly ones I like already, and recontextualizes them with the characters he has created. I already love the story of Orpheus (I actually wrote about half of a Spank based on him. Maybe this will inspire me to finish it, though it probably still will not include any Sandman).
The art in this story set is also beautiful. I’m a bit confused as to why this came out as e “Sandman Special #1” instead of part of the normal issue release but that’s a question for another day.
A small piece of me wishes that there had been more of a focus on the Endless but that would have taken away from Orpheus’s tale and I wouldn’t have liked that either so this is a completely baseless criticism and more just about me reaching for something to critique. Orpheus’s story always makes me uncomfortable because it’s so much build up for a sad event that you know must happen. It’s kind of like how in every Spiderman origin story the moment you meet Uncle Ben you know he’s a dead man but you still fall to like him and so you’re just sitting there, dreading whenever he gets shot.
I wish Neil Gaiman would write a whole series about Persephone and Hades. I love that story too. Yay for us getting to see Cerberus too.
